What Are You Actually Getting?

Customers are often told their vehicle has a ceramic coating or paint protection package without being given much detail.

What product was used?

Who installed it?

Was the paint corrected first?

How long did the installation take?

Those questions matter.

At Legion Detailing, a brand new vehicle can still receive around 8 to 12 man hours of paint correction before coating. Used vehicles may need 12 to 20 hours.

Before that, another 2 to 3 hours can go into washing and decontamination. Coating application and final inspection can take another 3 to 5 hours.

A proper ceramic coating install can easily involve 13 to 20 hours of work on a new vehicle.



Compare that with some dealerships where a porter or general employee applies the product in about an hour while the customer waits.

Those are not the same service.

New Cars Still Need Paint Correction

Brand new paint is not always perfect.

New vehicles are transported, stored outside, washed, moved around lots, and handled by multiple people before delivery.

We regularly see new vehicles with swirl marks, light scratches, water spots, sanding marks, and adhesive residue.

Ceramic coating does not remove these defects.



If the paint is not corrected first, you are simply coating over the problems.

We Often See No Evidence of the Coating

Over the years, we have maintained many vehicles that customers were told had dealership ceramic protection.

In many cases, we see little or no evidence that a real coating is still present.

The water behavior is poor, contamination sticks easily, and the paint behaves more like an unprotected surface.

That does not prove nothing was ever applied. It could be a weak product, poor preparation, or a coating that failed early.

Either way, the customer paid for ceramic protection and the results are not there.



So far, we have not had a dealership ceramic coating come through our shop that we would personally consider a satisfactory result.

Dealership PPF Can Have Similar Problems

PF is easier to inspect because you can physically see it.

We have seen dealership PPF with lifting edges, contamination underneath, poor patterns, visible seams, yellowing, and limited coverage.

Customers may also hear “front end protection” and assume the whole front is covered when only small sections are actually protected.

In some cases, the dealership does not even install the film. The work is outsourced and then marked up.



Before buying dealership PPF, ask what brand of film is being used, which panels are covered, and who is actually installing it.

Financing It Does Not Make It Cheaper

One of the easiest ways to sell these packages is to focus on the monthly payment.

“It is only a few more dollars per month” sounds much easier than paying $2,000 or $3,000 upfront.

The problem is that you are now financing that protection package with the vehicle.

At 3 to 6 percent interest, you are paying even more for a service that may already be heavily marked up.



The monthly payment may look small, but the total cost is what matters.

The Warranty Sounds Better Than It Performs

The warranty is usually one of the strongest selling points.

Over the years, we have had many customers come to Legion Detailing with dealership interior and exterior protection warranties after something was damaged.

We have documented the damage with photos and prepared estimates ranging from around $100 to $2,000.

So far, we have not seen one of those claims successfully completed through the dealership protection warranty.

That does not mean every claim everywhere will be denied, but it absolutely affects how we view the value of these warranties.



Customers should read the actual contract and look closely at exclusions, maintenance requirements, claim procedures, and what is really covered.

Why We Recommend a Professional Installer

Ceramic coating and PPF are specialized services.

They require proper preparation, quality products, clean working conditions, good lighting, and experienced installers.

You should know what product is being used.

You should know who is installing it.

You should know exactly what panels are protected.

You should understand what you are paying for before the work starts.



There should not be any mystery.

Our Opinion on Dealership Protection Packages

We are not saying every dealership protection package is bad.

Some dealerships work with good installers and use good products.

But based on what we have personally seen, we recommend being very skeptical of dealership ceramic coating and PPF until you know exactly what you are buying.

Ceramic coating is where we are most cautious. We have seen too many customers pay large amounts for protection only to bring the vehicle to us later with poor paint preparation and little evidence of a lasting coating.

PPF can have the same issue when cheap film, poor installation, or limited coverage is sold at a premium price.



If you are spending thousands of dollars protecting a new vehicle, you should know exactly what you are getting.
